A bit of information about the ride:
The route will try to use as much of the levee that is open. There
will be
a spur in the route at the North going into the city of
Okeechobee where there will be a lunch stop provided to the
riders. There will be 3 checkpoints/stops on the course where we
will provide drinks and snacks and the second stop will provide a pasta
and sandwich lunch.
This is run as a RUSA BREVET. (see http://RUSA.org)That means it is done
kinda like a road rally with checkpoints. The checkpoints open
and close with time. The open time of a checkpoint happens at a
rate around 21.5mph non-stop speed. You would have to averate a
MOVING speed of around 24mph to hit it too early. Sometimes this
will happen at the first checpoint (also called a control) but is very
hard to do by the second and later controls. if you manage to get
to a control too early chances are you are just a bit too early (like 5
minutes). There will be someone already there and you can fill
your bottles and grab some snacks which will probably burn up that
5minutes.
At a control you will present a card to the official (the cards are
given to you at the start) and they will mark the time, initial, and
stamp the card, check your name off the list and give you back your
card. Once you are given back your card you are open to start to
the next checkpoint/control.
Please follow the checkpoint proceedure as this will help us track
all of the riders so we will know when all of the riders have cleared a
control and that will allow us to close the control early and follow up
to the next control and check on rider progress to the next control.
As a BREVET it is a ride whereby you are required to be self
sufficient, although there will be at least 3+ officials who will be
watching and can provide assistance withing the rules of RUSA.
What that means in real terms is that we will be more inclined to
help people who are at the back of the pack than the leaders. And of
course we will try to help with any emergency (CALL 911 first!)
Note by RUSA rules you can have personal support at any
checkpoint/control but you cannot get personal support while on the
course. You can get help from any rider, official or a random
passer by. NO SUPPORT VEHICLES ON THE COURSE!!! (though I realize
they will need to drive to the control so as long as they are not
following or riding next to riders but are heading straight to the next
control then that is OK).
Because the course will be opened from 8AM until approx 13 hours later (9PM!)
or until the last rider comes in, you can ride the course as
individuals or as a group or as multiple groups. So there can be
fast med and slow groups or individuals if desired. Ride it the
way you want to ride it (but remember that you must still maintain a
actual speed greater than 9mph!) <The fastest this course
has been done is 6:30 {total time}, slowest was 12 hours. Most
ppl will finish in around 8:30 to 9hours>
